Low T
After more than 20 years of evaluating veterans and first responders, I
have rarely seen a man with Testosterone (T) levels that are consistent with
his age: most men had very low levels. Low T interferes with brain
health, whole body health, belly fat, emotions, sleep, sex drive and the
ability to reproduce. How did this problem get so bad ?
Physical trauma , including concussions resulting from parachuting, roof
collapses, jumps, falls, blast injuries and directed energy weapons (DEW) to
name a few and may damage the hypothalamic – pituitary - gonadal (H-P-
G) feedback system. If the H-P axis fiber tracts are damaged it interferes
with brain signaling for the production of testosterone.
Toxicity from burn pits (pesticides and microplastics), weapons fire (heavy
metals), super toxic sites, and other poisoning may also interfere with
production of testosterone. Urine toxicity testing has revealed high levels
of toxins and heavy metals in veterans and first responders even many
years later (post- exposure). Toxicity interferes with signaling connections
in the H – P axis, causes damage to the Leydig cells that produce
testosterone, and interfere with or block receptors on the cells. Toxicity
causing low T impairs sperm production and function so that there may be
no “swimmers”.
Testosterone is also important to brain health and facilitates masculine
behavior. Testosterone receptors are located in several important areas in
the cortex of the brain (responsible for cognitive processing and behavior)
and hippocampus (responsible for memory processing). Low Testosterone
interferes with nighttime sleep, emotional regulation and creates brain
fog.
Testosterone is critical to your whole body metabolism and controls your
metabolic rate. A lower metabolic rate is associated with weight gain.
Testosterone is important in regulating fat distribution. If you do not have
enough testosterone, you will have more belly fat. If you have more belly
fat, your testosterone level will be lower.
Men need to make sure they know their blood level of Testosterone: men
should not accept the answer that they are “within normal limits”. They
need to seek expert advice and monitoring for optimum Testosterone levels
with dosing of hormone replacement, making sure that symptoms are treated
but not having excessively high Testosterone. High T levels is not
advantageous either and has adverse consequences. If your Testosterone
level is low, check your brain health and evaluate for toxins. A normal
Testosterone level is key to feeling well. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
(HBOT) supports detoxification and helps to heal the fiber tracts of the
brain and facilitate restoration of the hypothalamic – pituitary - gonadal axis
for Testosterone production and helping to balance hormones.
